MMR Scare Stories Still Hurting Welsh Children

2.37.55pm GMT Wed 1st Nov 2006

96% of children, who reach their second birthday in the year (ending 31st March, 2006) had been immunised against diphtheria, polio and meningitis C but the figure was only 85% for measles, mumps and rubella.

Jenny Randerson, Health Spokesperson for the Welsh Liberal Democrats said that "although the take up of the MMR jab is increasing it remains well below recommended levels. We are still recovering from the scare stories that have emerged in recent years and I would urge parents to make sure their child receives immunisation for measles, mumps and rubella.

"Currently, not enough children are having the MMR vaccine because of autism fears, despite strong evidence to the contrary.

"MMR scare stories are still hurting Welsh Children."
