Labour Hustings: Give us a meddle free guarantee, says Jenny Randerson
11.49.30am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 8th Jun 2007
Ahead of the Labour deputy leadership hustings in Cardiff tomorrow, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Jenny Randerson has called on the candidates to give Wales a 'meddle free guarantee' if they become Deputy Prime Minister.
The Cardiff Central AM said: "I want assurances from the candidates that devolution in Wales will not be meddled with from Westminster. We need no new barriers if the Assembly is to deliver Welsh solutions for Welsh needs.
"For example, saying no to new nuclear energy. Large-scale power station developments should not be thrust upon us from Westminster. These are decisions for Cardiff Bay.
"From parachuting Alun Michael in to watering down the Government of Wales Act, Labour's record of ill-judged involvement from Westminster is clear. I call on all the candidates to give a guarantee that they will not meddle in Welsh affairs, or try and block new measures approved by the Assembly."
"The best way they can help Wales is by encouraging further devolution and persuading their colleagues in Westminster to release the powers the Assembly needs to get the job done. "
