Randerson Supports Carers Week

4.55.17pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 11th Jun 2007

Carers Week aims to draw the attention of decision-makers to the issues faced by the UK's six million carers amid calls that more needs to be done to help change the lives of carers for the better.

Welsh Lib Dem Social Services spokesperson Jenny Randerson AM, said: "Carers play a vital role in society but often pay for it in lost earnings and poor mental health.

"With more rights and more information carers might get the support they deserve. The All Wales Accord would introduce rights for carers.

"Small things like respite care and access to information can create a win-win situation for the NHS, the taxpayer and carers.

"I have numerous friends who have direct experience of caring and the pressures it creates. I am passionate about creating a better Wales for carers."

Introducing a measure for Carers' Rights was a key pledge in the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto Fair Green Future, and has been incorporated in to the All Wales Accord, the programme for government negotiated between the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives.
