Randerson Challenges Rhodri on Enhanced GP Services

5.29.12pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 12th Jun 2007

Jenny Randerson warned that decisions by Cardiff LHB regarding the commissioning of enhanced GP services in Cardiff may lead to additional pressures elsewhere in the NHS. Jenny today raised the issue in First Minister's questions.

Welsh Lib Dem Health spokesperson Jenny Randerson AM, said "Because of Cardiff LHBs difficult financial position GP services related to nursing homes, asylum seekers, mental health and learning disabilities are under threat. It is alleged that no real clinical risk assessment of the effects of these decisions has been undertaken. Any reduction in service levels may have serious unintended consequences.

"The Governments strategy 'Designed for Life' set out a vision of healthcare which centered on enhanced primary care services but time after time we see cuts in the services to be provided by GPs. I realise that LHBs are under financial pressure but we will never make the switch to a more modern NHS if we do not invest in local services.

"My GP survey backs up the idea that rather than there being an increase in services, they are actually being cut.

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are passionate about enhanced GP services as we believe that they maximise the effectiveness of GPs. They also relieve the burden on other areas of the NHS such as emergency services.

"Hopefully by drawing the attention of the First Minister to the issue we can help prevent cuts to vital services that support the most vulnerable in society."
