Welsh Lib Dems say to Westminster - don't scupper child poverty plans3.01.28pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 10th Jul 2007 Welsh Liberal Democrats today welcomed plans for greater powers for Wales to tackle child poverty and safeguard vulnerable children from harm. They also called on MPs not to block the proposals. The plans will allow the Assembly to make it a legal requirement for public bodies, including the NHS and local councils to make a commitment and demonstrate action to combat child poverty. Welsh Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Kirsty Williams said: "I am glad the Government proposes greater powers to tackle such an important issue. I hope that these plans will help tackle child poverty by making public bodies work together. "Last year, 100, 000 more children in Wales were living in poverty, which calls for drastic improvements . "However, I urge the Government to work with Westminster to get this passed as law as soon as possible. Nobody could argue against such a positive step for vulnerable children in Wales. We will engage fully in taking these powers forward. "For this reason, I hope the government will be able to persuade their Westminster colleagues to support it." Jenny Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrat Health and Social Services spokesperson said: "I am pleased that these proposals will mean greater powers to safeguard children from harm and neglect. "Many aspects of social care could be improved without legislation, for example more stable funding for children's services could improve staff morale. However I welcome these powers coming to Wales. If we want to be serious about tackling these problems, we need Wales-specific solutions." Ends/Diwedd Release/Rhyddhau: 10/07/2007 Contact/Cyswllt: Marie Concannon on 02920 898426
