Welsh Lib Dem Assembly Member for Cardiff Central and Hepatitis C champion, Jenny Randerson AM, has tabled a Statement of Opinion in the Assembly calling for urgent action on the Blood Borne Viral Action Plan for Wales, which will deal with the spread of deadly liver disease.
A recent damning Parliamentary report showed that Wales is lagging behind the rest of the UK in dealing with Hepatitis C
Jenny Randerson's Statement of Opinion, calls on the Assembly Government to bring forward their plan as a matter of urgency.
Jenny Randerson said: "The Government has been promising action since 2004, but patients are still waiting. Sadly, there are many people suffering from Hep C who do not even know it yet.
"We need urgent action on this. Five years is long enough to wait for something that will save lives."
"I hope many of my Assembly colleagues on all sides will join me in calling for action by signing this statement."
NOTES:
The SOO, the Assembly's equivalent of an Early Day Motion in Westminster reads as follows:
The National Assembly:
notes that while 14,000 people in Wales have Hepatitis C, a cancer- causing infectious virus, awareness of the condition remains low and many of those with the virus are not diagnosed and treated.
notes that in spite of the Government's commitment to develop a Blood Borne Viral Hepatitis Action Plan since 2004, the plan has still not been launched.
calls on the Government to end five years of waiting and publish the Action Plan without delay to ensure that Wales does not continue to lag behind Scotland and England in tackling Hepatitis C.
