Welsh Lib Dem Assembly Member for Cardiff Central, Jenny Randerson AM has today called for action to ensure those pensioners who have lost income from savings make the most of Council Tax benefits that are available.
The current economic downturn has left a whole new number of pensioners in poverty as the value of savings has crumbled.
Jenny Randerson said: "I believe we are seeing the creation of a worryingly large group of pensioners who have not had to face the struggle and hardship they are seeing now. The dwindling value of savings has left thousands of people on the bread line. We have to send a message that there is no shame in asking for help.
"There are thousands of people who don't claim the Council Tax benefits they are owed and I would urge everyone who has not checked if they are eligible to do so.
"I also believe that its time the Labour-Plaid Government responded to the calls from many of my constituents to re-reband properties in Wales. Labour were quick enough to re-band upwards as an experiment to see if they could get away with it across the UK. I'd be keen to know why they are not so quick to reband in the other direction now house prices have tumbled."
